Finding the Right Company for Your Loft Conversion

Finding the right company for your loft conversion

Undergoing a loft conversion is one of the biggest construction projects you and your family could undertake, so finding the right company is understandably something that can cause some anxiety.

If you’ve landed on here then it’s going to be easy for us to say ‘choose us’. We believe in our service, and we know that we go above and beyond for every one of our clients. But don’t just take our word for it, dig a little deeper on all the companies you’re considering. These are the essential things you need to research before bringing tradespeople into your home.

Reviews

There’s no better way to get a true insight into how a company works than by hearing from previous customers. Whether you’re using independent review sites like TrustPilot, looking at Google Reviews, social media, or the testimonials page on their website, listen to what people have to say, because their experiences could indicate what you should expect. (You can find our reviews here.)

Cowboys like cash

Make sure you take note of how the company likes to be paid. For most larger contractors, they’ll take standard forms of payment by card, cash, or even an instalment plan. But if the company you’re considering refuses to give you options, and pushes for an upfront cash sum, steer WELL clear and look elsewhere.

Cheap does not equal good

Having any kind of conversion or house extension is not cheap, and regardless of your financial circumstances you will obviously want to find the best deal for your budget. It’s important you shop around for quotes. Make sure they’re free quotes that come with no obligations (like ours, naturally), and pay attention to how the costs are broken down. Don’t forget to ask if the project is covered by a guarantee, and how long for.

Know the company, read the contract

Don’t just call a company once and commit, spend some time getting to know the people you’ll have in your home. First impressions matter, and after some small talk over a coffee, you should have a much better idea of who it is you’re dealing with. The contracts should arrive in plenty of time before anything happens in your home. It’s not exciting reading but you’ll need to read it through carefully, and sign an agreement of acceptable terms before work commences.

Check credentials

The longer a contractor works in the industry, the more accreditations they’re likely to have achieved. From being registered with respected construction organisations to having met the requirements for some of the strictest and most reputable standards agencies in the country, badges matter.

(We’re proud of ours, see them here.)

Customer service, and support

Ask your chosen company about their customer service once the project is underway. Do you have a central point of contact or is there a generic email or number. Chasing after tradespeople, late deliveries, or trying to get an answer to an email you send 6 days ago is not helpful. Neither is having to re-introduce yourself and your project because it’s never the same person replying to you.

(From the moment the project begins and beyond the handover, so we assign you a personal project manager.)

When choosing the right company for your loft conversion (or basement conversion, or extension, or any major work, really) you’re looking for peace of mind; knowing that the job will be done on time, on budget, and with your best interests in mind. Check out our reviews, take a peek at our credentials, and if you want to know more, let’s chat. No obligation.
